2007 2X4 The Challenge Rules
1. Each participant in the 2007 - 2X4 Challenge must be a member of the Suncoast Woodcrafters Guild (SWG).
2. An eligible entry is an item completed within the previous 12 calendar months, which has not been previously submitted in whole or in part, to any prior SWG 2X4 challenges.
3. Each participant can submit multiple entries - entries remain the property of the participant.
4. For all categories, the entry must be made from a single 8 foot length of wood, no more than 2" wide by 4" thick. Any species can be used although bonus points will be awarded if the species is one of spruce, pine, fir, hemlock or cedar. i.e. a plain old 2X4.
5. For all categories the entry can be fastened using any glue and finished using any substance commonly understood to be, or can be explained to be a wood finish. To obtain the bonus points for species, the entry must be finished in a transparent finish that permits wood grain to be identified, at least on one surface.
6. For all categories, the entry can also include one other material for decorative purposes, or for a usage that cannot be replicated with wood. The material should not be the primary focus of the entry nor should it be used in a way that makes the piece larger by replacing a component that be normally made of wood.
7.The deadline for entries will be March 31, 2007. A completed entry form is required for each entry. Blank entry forms will be available at the February and March regular meetings.
8.All entries must be brought to the meeting location between 6:00 and 7:00 on June 20th, 2007.
9.Each participant has up to 8 minutes to present and assemble his/her entry, describing salient project details including the nature of the project, construction challenges, and any fact deemed relevant by the judges.
10.Eligible judges are the SWG members present at the April 2007 meeting together with possibly one or more outside judges to be announced.
11.After the presentation of all the entries, there will be an opportunity for judges to examine each entry and ask specific questions of each participant.
12.Judges will rate originality and creativity, craftsmanship, effectiveness (best incorporation of the woods' size and unique characteristics) and artistic merit.
13.Prizes amounts will depend somewhat on the volume of entries. In addition to awards for the best project, an award will also be presented to the participant whose entry collects the most votes for one of the following criteria: Most original, Best Craftsmanship, Most Practical, Best use of 2X4, Best Artistic Merit
